Roundtable – “The Australian Superannuation Sector – Success Story”

Co-hosted by ACFS and Austrade

Discussion focus:

  • The history of the Australian superannuation sector
  • Superannuation policy & regulation and the role of government
  • The landscape of the Australian superannuation sector i.e. key players and
  • The strategies adopted to generate high yields.

Maeil Business Newspaper, Korea’s largest daily economic newspaper (equivalent to the AFR) in June, will publish a special feature (a three part series) about countries who are leaders in superannuation systems & fund management, specifically Australia the US and Japan, stressing that Australian superannuation capability information would be central part of the feature.

The reason Maeil want to publish a feature on superannuation is because of the challenges facing Korean superannuation.  The Korean retirement pension, introduced in 2005, is growing rapidly (Top 4 funds totalling US$150 billion in 2016) but its yield is about 1%, less than bank interest when the management fees are factored in.  On top of this the country has the fastest ageing population in the OECD as well as the lowest birth rates will increase the pressure on funds to perform.

The article will reflect the current status of the Korean pension system, profile and compare that of Australia as an exercise in benchmarking Korean retirement pension managers as a pathway to address the challenges faced by Korea’s superannuation sector.
